History and Remembrances of the life of Trinity Lutheran - Chariton
Trinity held their first service on November 19, 1989, and celebrated Charter Sunday on December 9, 1990, with 58 members present. Initially Trinity held Sunday school classes and Divine Services at the Johnson Community Center by Chariton High School. A medical clinic was purchased and remodeled in September 1993, which is our present location. The new church building was dedicated on November 28, 1993.
We have a kitchen; a small lending library; a fellowship room; the Mary & Martha Room, from which we serve snacks; Samson Room where the LWML, RIOT, and Catechism classes meet; classrooms named for the saints of old like Noah and David; a tiny sacristy and a full basement where the youth room is located, complete with comfy couches.
When our congregation started as a mission church, founding members rented a building in town and telephoned every person in the Chariton phone book to let them know we were starting a new church. What an outreach!
The Gift of Stained Glass Windows
Stained-Glass Windows at Trinity Lutheran Church Chariton Iowa (2009)
"I was talking to my sister in Texas one day about our little church. I mentioned that it used to be a doctor’s office and although a lot of work had been done, it just didn’t feel like a church without stained-glass windows. Shortly after that she and her husband sent our church a check for $1,500.00 to be used for stained-glass windows.
"We spoke to the council members and they said we could pursue stained-glass windows. A committee was formed and we found a couple different people who would come to our church and measure windows, suggest ideas, and quote amounts that the windows could cost. The stained glass company that we chose suggested keeping the windows simple, so they would complement the lines of our building.
"We then took our information to the congregation for a vote, and the motion to proceed with the windows passed. We made sketches and took them to our Pastor for his approval and he liked what we had chosen.
"Window #1 - an open Bible (shown above)
Window #2 - a dove for Baptism
Window #3 - Martin Luther's Rose
Window #4 - bread and wine for Communion (the Holy Sacrament)
Window #5 - a lit candle for Jesus, the Light of the World
"The professionals at the stained-glass store were our last stop. They worked with us to get the colors and the pictures just right for our windows. We had enough money for two windows when we began our project. The owner of the stained-glass store assured us that once we got started the rest of the money would not take long to collect. All five windows were finished the same year."
